Welcome and Copy of Calliglyph Article

Welcome to the Calliglyphs blog.

This blog follows on from my article on Calliglyphs, which is titled 'Calliglyphs, Graffiti and Markers in the UK' and appeared in Archaeologies.

For ease the article is linked here

The reason I developed the notion of calliglyphs is that graffiti is usually (and legally) defined as being created without the permission of the owner.  However the further back in time one goes the more problematic this (modern) definition becomes.

Calliglyphs (that is a glyph, or mark, made by hand) gets round this definition and each can be seen in its own context.
Another usage is a more informal definition - marginalia of the world.

Using these definitions small (legal or illegal) words, signs or symbols, official or unofficial, can be seen in their own context.

Please feel free to email me on cdaniell22@gmail.com for any discussion on the subject.
